Gear Oil:
RPL-K Series
The RPL-K series gear oil is a semi-synthetic, EP,
non-leak, MoS² fortified gear oil that is formulated
using highly refined, hydro-treated paraffin base oils
and synthetic PAO fluids with special additives to provide excellent EP and
anti-wear performance.
At start-up, typical conventional gear oils have a
tendency to push lubricants to the side of a gearbox by
the centrifugal force of the rotating gears. As the
gears turn, the splashing action eventually provides
lubrication. But at start-up, when the metal-to-metal
wear is the generally the greatest, the gears lack
sufficient lubrication. The RPL-K gear oils are
different. Immediately when the gears start, the RPL-K
gear oils adhere to the gear teeth, and by resisting
centrifugal force, they coat the gears from the outset
providing a protective film of lubrication right from
the initial critical moments.
The RPL-K gear oils are tacky. They contain a shear
stable tackifier for extra-adhesive to prevent
drip-drown, leak and splatter. Gear box leakage is also
virtually eliminated, especially when there are worn
seals. The overall result is a noticeable reduction in
overall oil consumption. As well, the oil film resists
fling during high-speed operations and will remain on
the gears while the machine is idle.
All RPL-K gear oils contain a stable colloidal
suspension of Molybdenum disulfide (MoS²), an additive
that helps forms a thin protective layer of solid
particles on metal surfaces and fills in the microscopic
peaks and valleys (asperities) that are always present
on metal surfaces, no matter how highly polished or
machined. Then, acting essentially like tiny ball
bearings, the MoS² will "roll" the load up to 500,000
pounds per square inch, preventing metal-to-metal
contact and thereby reducing friction and wear.
RPL-K gear oils are also formulated to resist the
formation of acidic by-products that tend to cause soft
sludge deposits or hard varnish and lacquer coatings to
form on the metal surfaces. These deposits lead to
friction, increased heat, increased energy consumption
and eventually the possibility of premature equipment
breakdown.
The RPL-K gear oils are used in a wide variety of
industrial and mobile equipment including mining,
material processing, cement manufacturing, construction,
steel and paper mills, tile, insulation, glass and
textile manufacturing, farm machinery, printing and
binding machinery, elevators, escalators and process
mixing equipment. They provide superior lubrication for
enclosed gear drives and reducers from fractional
horsepower gear motors to large high horsepower units on
metal rolling mills and mine hoists using a wide variety
of gears including spur, bevel, herringbone and worm
gear. They are recommended for lubrication of industrial
hypoid type gears, gears subject to shock loading,
transmission gear cases and worm drive axles on mobile
contractor type equipment, open pit and underground mine
machinery where highly loaded components such as
reduction or power transmitting gears are protected.

No special precautions are
required. Follow regular maintenance instructions
as provided with original equipment. Although
the RPL-K gear oils are formulated to be compatible with
conventional oils, it is discouraged in particular due
to the potential adverse effect on the additives such as
competition, dilution, and a number of other factors. it is recommended to
thoroughly drain and clean systems prior to switching over.
The proper type of grade of gear oil is important
to the performance and life of a gear set. Selection of
the correct lubricant viscosity is based on speed, load,
operating temperatures and gear geometry.
All RPL-K gear oils meet or exceed the performance
requirements of US Steel 224 and AGMA 250.04 and AGMA
251.02 specifications for industrial gear
oil.
