NLGI Grease Classification Chart

One of the more common methods used to classify grease is by measuring the consistency  and ability of a sample to resist deformation when subjected to an external force, thereby providing some measure of the relative "softness" or "hardness" of a grease.

Consistency is most often expressed in terms of a NLGI Grade as set out by the National Lubricating Grease Institute. This standardized scale is based on the worked penetration of grease in accordance with standards including the ASTM Method D217 "Cone Penetration of Lubricating Grease".

NLGI Number ASTM Penetration (Worked)
@25°C ± 0.5°C (77°F ± 1°F)
000 445 - 475 strokes
00 400 - 430
0 455 - 385
1 310 - 340
2 265 - 395
3 220 - 250
4 175 - 205
5 130 - 160
6 85 - 115
